Rose and gem chandelier design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A rose sits at the centre of a symmetrical design, flanked by ornate, lace-like wing shapes with leaves. Dotted chains and small teardrop beads hang beneath, ending in a large faceted gem with smaller gems on either side. The linework is solid black on a pale purple-grey paper background, with fine hatching inside the gem and petals and no colour or shading.

The chandelier in the saloon had forty-one drops of cut glass, and by the third day out of Southampton I had cleaned every one of them twice. Mr Pell, the purser, said the Captain liked the room to sparkle when the sea was rough, because nervous passengers looked up rather than down. So I climbed the brass ladder each morning with a bucket of vinegar water and a chamois, and I counted the drops the way my mother counted her rosary beads.

On the fourth night the swell came up from the south-west and the whole ship groaned like a barn door. The lamps swung. The glass drops chimed against one another in a thin, unhappy music, and the stewards ran about with their hands out, as if they could hold the room still. I stayed on the ladder. Below me, the Captain's wife had a pink rose in a silver vase on the long table, and every time the floor tilted, its petals slid a fraction toward the rim.
Near midnight the largest drop, the one we called the Diamond though it was only lead crystal, came loose from its wire. I watched it turn in the lamplight, catching gold and violet, and I put my hand out. It struck my palm hard and stayed there. I held it up to the lamp, and the whole saloon was scattered with small bright points, as if the sea itself had been caught and cut into shapes.
Next morning I fixed the wire with pliers and a twist of copper, and I did not tell Mr Pell. The drop hangs lowest of them all now, a little heavier on one side than the rest. When the ship rolls I watch it swing out and back, and I think it knows exactly how far it can go before it has to return.
