Hopeless romantic finger lettering with hearts
Lettering · Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two hands with bold black block letters tattooed across the fingers, spelling HOPELESS on the upper knuckles and ROMANTIC on the lower ones, with small outlined hearts between the letters. The lettering is solid black with simple, slightly uneven fill and no shading. A colourful floral tattoo is visible on the forearm at the right edge, and the hands rest on a light patterned fabric with grey nail polish and two rings.

Dear Maureen, you will say I have gone soft in the head, and you may be right, but I have had the words put across my knuckles for the whole harbour to read, so you can hardly accuse me of hiding it. Ronnie did the letters at the back of the chandlers on Tuesday with a machine that sounded like a wasp in a jam jar. He kept asking if I was sure. I said the sea had taken everything else of mine, it could have the spelling too. He did the H with a small heart after it and the O went in clean, and by the time he reached the S I had stopped minding the buzz.

Derek saw them on the quay this morning and said nothing for almost a whole minute, which for Derek is a sort of sermon. Then he asked whether I meant the ROMANTIC on the lower joints or the lower joints of the men who gave me the ring. I told him to mind his own knuckles. He has a crab on his left hand that looks like it was drawn by a child with a grudge, so he has no business laughing at anybody's lettering.
The boats came in at four with the tide and I stood at the rail counting the nets on the Mary Rose while the gulls argued over the bait box. The letters look dark in the daylight, darker than I expected, and the little hearts between them are shy things, barely there. I keep turning my hands over to see them, the way you check a pocket for keys you already know are in your coat. Come Sunday and you can read them yourself. Bring the good tea, not that brown stuff the Co-op sells, and tell me truthfully whether the spacing is wonky.
