Wild Child lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photo of a forearm with the words WILD CHILD in black, hand-lettered style capitals with thin, slightly uneven strokes. A white dressing is taped over the wrist and hand, which suggests the tattoo may be fresh, and a second piece of dark script is partly visible on the hand. The background is grey and the lighting is soft, with the forearm as the clear focus.

The landlady at Marlow Terrace had a rule about the bathroom geyser, and Nell Pritchard broke it every morning at six. She stood under the thin spray with her jaw clenched, counting seconds the way her father had taught her to count waves, and when the water went cold she climbed out and wrapped herself in the towel that smelled of someone else's lavender. Downstairs the Thursday lodgers were already arguing over the last of the marmalade.

Her brother Tom had sent a postcard from Liverpool with three words on the back and nothing else: Come if you can. She had read it so often the corners had gone soft. What she had not told anyone was that she had already bought the biro-black ink, the cheap needle and the sterile wrap from the chemist on Pier Road, and had practised her letters on the back of a rent book until they stopped looking like a child's.
On the Saturday she walked to the harbour wall with the sea wind pulling at her hair and a folded paper in her pocket. The man in the shop by the lifeboat house did not ask her why. He only asked her to spell it twice, and then he taped the dressing over the fresh ink and told her to keep it dry, which she already knew was impossible.
That evening she stood at the landlady's door with her bag on her shoulder. Mrs Gorse looked at the bandage, then at Nell's face, and sighed. "Geyser's on the left," she said, and stepped back to let her in.
