A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mare came out of the birch wood the morning after the flood, when the ford at Hollin Bridge was still brown with silt and nobody in Askby would go near the water. She stood at the edge of the alder carr with her head turned, as if listening for someone who had called her name years before, and her mane lay back over her neck in long, wet strands.

Bett Rawlins, who kept the goats on the common, was the only one brave or foolish enough to walk out to her. She had a rope of plaited nettle fibre in one hand and a crust in the other. The mare let her come close and took the crust, then turned and went back into the trees at a walk, looking over her shoulder every few paces, so that Bett followed without quite deciding to.

Deep in the carr they found the old mill race, and under it a cart with two wheels sunk to the axle and a man's boots still laced to the seat. Bett knew whose they were. Walter Fenn had gone to market in the spring and not come back, and the village had agreed, out of kindness, not to say he had drowned. The mare put her nose to the boots and blew softly. Bett understood then that the animal had not been asking for help. She had been waiting for someone to come and tell her it was over.

They pulled the cart out together with the rope. When it came up onto the bank the mare was gone, though a single long hair lay across the seat, dark and curled at the end like a question. Bett kept it in a tin for forty years and never once tied it to anything, because a thing that does not ask to be held should not be.
