Tribal flame and infinity swirl on shoulder

Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black tribal-style flame or wave motif sits on the upper back near the shoulder, with a thin outlined loop shaped like an infinity sign and curling tails trailing down to two pointed tips. The solid black shapes have sharp, spiked edges set against the lighter skin, while the fine lines of the loop and tails are more delicate. The photograph is black and white, with the tattoo placed centrally and the shoulder and neck edges visible around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The kettle had boiled dry twice before Maren Oake came down to the harbour wall, and by then the fog had thickened into something you could lean against. Her grandfather always said the sea kept its promises in a tidy way: it gave back what it took, but only in the order it pleased. Tonight it was giving back a lantern, a bent oar, and a long length of tarred rope that looped and doubled on the wet stones like a sleeping animal.

She knelt and followed the rope with her fingers. At its end, caught in a knot she could not have tied, was a little brass bell gone green at the lip. When she lifted it, the fog stirred. Out past the breakwater, something pale turned over, and for a moment the water itself seemed to burn, a low blue flame that ran along the swell in sharp, spiked tongues before folding back into the dark.

Her father had been a fisherman who never once spoke of the currents off the Skerries. He had only ever said that when the sea wanted you, it would send a light first, and that you should count the flames: if there were two, you could turn back, and if there was one, it was already too late to be sensible. Maren counted. There were two, curling round each other in a loop that opened and closed like a slow breath.

She rang the bell once, softly, and the flames leaned towards the sound. Then she tied the rope to the iron ring on the wall, and wrapped her coat tighter, and went home to put the kettle on again.
