Horse head with spiked headpiece on shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey horse head wearing a buckled bridle and a spiked, studded headpiece fills the upper arm and extends onto the shoulder. The horse is rendered with soft shading and fine detail around the muzzle and harness, while the mane fades into loose, dark linework. The image is a close, slightly angled photo of the tattoo against a dim background with no other visible text or marks.

The miller's youngest daughter found the grey mare standing in the bracken the morning after the frost, her head still wearing the iron crown the blacksmith at Hollin had fitted for the summer fair. Nobody in Ashby Wood had ever seen a horse wear armour, and nobody wanted to be the one to ask where it had come from.

The mare would not be led. She walked ahead of the girl along the deer path, stopping where the spikes of her headpiece caught the low branches and shook them until the leaves rained down. Her bridle had buckles that rang when she tossed her head, and each buckle was stamped with the same mark as the church bell, which the old men said was a warning.
At the clearing where the three oaks grow, the mare knelt. The girl understood then that the harness had been put on to keep something in, and that the mare had carried it out of the village one winter at a time for a hundred years. She loosened the buckles with her cold fingers, and the iron came away from the grey skull like bark from a dead branch.
Back in the village the blacksmith found the crown hanging on his own door in the morning, its spikes bent inward, and nothing else. He nailed it above the lintel. On nights when the wind comes up the lane, the children say, you can hear it ring.
