Ornate scrollwork and skull cameo across the chest
Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A large ornamental tattoo spans the upper chest and shoulders, with a central oval cameo containing a shaded skull-faced figure framed by curling acanthus-style scrollwork and a crest at the top. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth, with strong contrast between the dark ink and light grey highlights. The wearer's face is cropped out, and a hand rests against the cameo over a black top.

Mother Ostrand would not let me leave the workshop until the frame was finished, so I sat at her bench in the lamp smoke of Carrow Vale and filed acanthus leaves until my thumbs bled into the silver. Outside, the river Heel ran black beneath the bridge, and the bell of St Ysolde tolled the fourth hour of a Tuesday that had no business being so cold.

The oval in the centre was the difficult part. Lord Ambry had commissioned a likeness of his dead wife, but Mother Ostrand had never cut a face she liked, so when he came back she had carved bone instead of flesh, the cheekbones pared down to the grin beneath and the hair lifted into a veil of fine scroll. He paid in advance and did not look at it. He only asked whether it could hang on a chain against the breastbone, where a heartbeat would show through the metal.
I held the finished cameo up to the lamp on the last night. The light found a hairline crack I had not made, running from brow to jaw, and under it, pressed into the back in letters so small I needed a glass to read them, the name Ysolde Ambry and the words I was not sorry. Mother Ostrand had laughed when I showed her, then stopped laughing and said the Ambrys always took their wives back in the end.
I wrapped it in lamb's wool and set it in the drawer with the other unclaimed pieces. I did not tell her that the crack had been there since morning, or that I had watched her breathe on the silver to fog it, as if she were checking the face was still alive.
