Horse, peonies and bird down the side of a thigh
Japanese · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo covers the side of the leg, showing a horse wearing an ornate bridle with pearl-like beads and a turquoise stone, framed by pink peonies and green leaves. A blue bird with yellow accents and a skull sit among the flowers, with grey shading and bold black outlines. The design wraps from the hip down the thigh, with a dark background and a wooden floor visible behind.

The grey mare came down the Dellow road on the last Tuesday before the thaw, her bridle hung with pearl-coloured beads that clicked like a rosary whenever she tossed her head. Nobody in Harrowgate Fold could say who had sold her, and nobody liked to ask the stranger leading her, a tall woman with a turquoise ring and a blue bird stitched across the shoulders of her coat. She stabled the mare in the old tithe barn, paid in silver that nobody in the village had ever seen, and left the bridle on.

Under the eaves that winter, peonies began to open on the whitewashed wall of the barn, though nobody had planted them and the frost lay thick across the yard. Tom Sayer's boy swore the blue bird roosted on the rafter beam at dusk and sang in a voice like a kettle coming to the boil. The mare grew restless when the snow came sideways, stamping until the boards shook, and each morning her dapples looked a shade fainter, as if someone were drawing the spots back into her hide one at a time.
On Candlemas the woman came back for her. She did not ride the mare out. She stood in the barn doorway with one hand on the bridle and asked the Sayer boy for the parish ledger, and he showed her the page where he had written down every debt the village owed the tithe barn. She tore it out, folded it into a small bird, and set it on the mare's withers. The beads stopped clicking. When the thaw came the next morning, the stall was empty, the peonies on the wall were the only colour left in the Fold, and the bridle hung on its nail, still warm to the touch.
