Howling wolf head ink design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A wolf head is drawn in profile with its muzzle raised as if howling. The fur is filled with dense, decorative patterns of flowing strands, braided lines, scalloped shapes and small triangles, with stippled dots on the snout. The work is in black ink on off-white paper, with a soft vignette around the edges.

The mules would not go past the cairn at Hollin Gap, so I walked the last stretch myself with the lantern held low, counting the flat stones the way my grandfather taught me. Snow had come in sideways since noon. Every few steps the wind found a new gap in my collar and I thought of the cloth Mam used to weave, the herringbone of it, and how she would say a good wool keeps the weather out by letting it sit on top.

The howl started below the scree, one long line that climbed and then broke into a run of short notes, like someone testing a whistle. The mules stopped dead. I stopped too. It was not the thin cry of a fox. It came from a deep chest and had the patience of an animal that knew it had been heard. I answered the only way I knew, by tapping the lantern against the iron ring on the post three times, the way the carriers did when they were lost and wanted the others to know where the road ran.
Something moved on the far side of the ridge. Grey, then pale, then gone. Where it had been, the snow was printed with tracks as neat as plaited rope, each one set close to the last. I followed them without meaning to, through the dip where the wind goes quiet, and found the old pass path under the drift just where the wolf had left it bare.
Morning came up pink over the Fells and the mules walked into Keld as if nothing had happened. I told the innkeeper about the wolf and he laughed, then went quiet and poured me a second cup. He said the wolves had not come down that side since his father's time. I did not argue. I only pulled my scarf up and found the weave of it pressed into my palm where I had gripped the lantern all night, a row of small triangles, pointing the way I had come.
