Snarling wolf head in dotwork and linework
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A wolf head faces right in profile, mouth open to show teeth and tongue, with a heavy, shaggy mane sweeping down and back. The outline is bold and the fur is built from stippled dots and short strokes, with denser speckling in the shadowed areas. The drawing is in black ink on a pale background, with no colour and a plain, centred composition.

The wolf came down to Porthkell the week the herring failed, and it walked the length of the quay as if it owned the stones. Its mane was full of spray and its jaws stood open, pink tongue lolling over teeth the colour of old piano keys. Mabry Tonkin was gutting the last cod of the morning at the fish house door, and she did not drop her knife when the animal stopped in front of her.

"You're thin," she told it, which was true of the both of them. The men on the slipway said she should shout, or throw the gaff, or at least fetch Harold from the lifeboat house. She did none of these things. She set the cod's head on the flat of an upturned barrel and nudged it across the cobbles with the side of her boot. The wolf ate it in three bites, the speckled fur of its mane shivering with each swallow, then turned and climbed the cliff path toward the moor.
The nets came up full the next morning, so heavy that two boats had to tow them in. Nobody in Porthkell argued about why. All through the winter, when the wind swung north and the gulls went quiet, a head was left on that barrel at dusk, and it was always gone by dawn.
Her grandson Jory asked her once what the wolf was owed. Mabry wiped her knife on her apron and looked past the breakwater, where the swell broke white and endless against the rocks. "The hills lent us the fish," she said. "The sea only takes back what it was given." Out on the grey water, the spray hung in the air like dots of ink settling on paper, and neither of them went in until the light had gone.
