Howling wolf on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large wolf is shown with its head raised and jaws open, set against tree silhouettes that rise up the upper arm. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, with soft grey gradients across the fur and dense detail along the lower section. The image is in black and grey, with a dark t-shirt and green foliage in the background.

Dear Aunt Morag, The wolf came through the birch wood at the exact moment Tom said 'I do', which Gwen says is either a sign or a coincidence and she refuses to let me decide which. Half the marquee was still dabbing its eyes when the howl started up from the edge of the trees behind the old keeper's cottage, long and rising, and nobody moved until the last note had gone thin and gone out.

You'll remember the keeper, Donald Pryce, who used to say the wolves had been gone from these hills for three hundred years and he'd still set a trap for one if it dared come back. He died in March. His nephew, who runs the estate now, has kept the cottage roof on and let the birches grow up round the path, and when he saw the sketches for the day he said that was the only proper way to see Glen Ardle, from the inside of the wood looking out.

Gwen's father stood up in the middle of the speeches and walked out to the terrace with his glass still full. We found him at the wall, looking up at the ridge, and he said nothing for a long while. Then he said Pryce once told him a wolf only howls when it has found the rest of its pack. I thought that was a sad thing to say on a wedding day. Gwen didn't. She took his arm, and they stood there until the band struck up again.

I'll post you the photograph when the proofs come back. Tom's cousin took it with a borrowed lens. The wolf's head is raised and its jaws are open against the pale trunks, every strand of its ruff picked out in soft grey, and I couldn't stop looking at it.

Love, Eleanor
