Black and grey peony sleeve on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a grey t-shirt and dark jeans shows a large black and grey floral tattoo on her outer forearm, reaching towards the elbow. The piece depicts several peony or rose-like blooms with layered petals and dark foliage, built from fine linework and soft grey shading. Colour is absent, and the composition is cropped at the torso against a blurred warm background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The petals have started to loosen by the time you reach the terrace, and the gardener is shouting at the boy who dropped the water jar. You step over the spill without looking down. Rain pooled in the cistern overnight, and your sandals are wet to the ankle, but the flowers along the north wall hold their heads up under it, grey in the early light, heavy as mourners who have agreed to stay for the whole service.

The nurse who raised you told the story of the flower like a bedtime song, smelling of wool and crushed thyme. A physician named Paeon healed the gods when they were wounded in battle. The god of medicine grew jealous of his skill and plotted to kill him, so Zeus, who would not allow such a thing, turned the man into a bloom that could never be cut down. You never believed it whole. Still, you tend the bed, and every morning you count the buds.
Today there are nine open and one still tight as a closed fist. Your task is to carry the spent heads in a reed basket down to the physician's house in the lower town. He sits at a cedar table pinching a petal between finger and thumb, and tells you the roots must dry in shade, never sun. You nod. You say nothing about the bud, which you have already decided to leave alone.
On the way back the basket is lighter and the streets are loud. At the shrine by the fountain the boy is kneeling beside the broken jar, trying to fit the shards together like a puzzle. You stop, set one petal on the stone beside him, and keep walking. At the garden you leave the last bud on its stalk, where the morning sun will reach it first.
