Hummingbird and orchids on the side
Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A hummingbird in mid-flight, with a green body, blue-tinted head and a long thin beak, moves towards a branch of pink orchids. The bird and flowers are shaded to look three-dimensional, with soft gradients on the wings, petals and stem. Bright pinks and greens dominate the composition, set against the curve of the skin and a patterned fabric at the bottom edge.

In the hill country of Orrun, where the rivers ran red with clay, there lived a beekeeper's daughter named Maren Lusk who had never once been allowed to leave the orchard wall. Her father said the world beyond it was full of wind and wanting, and that a girl with honey on her hands should stay where the bees knew her. So she stayed, and she learned the names of the orchids that grew in the shade of the old plum trees, pink as the inside of a shell, and she spoke to them the way other children spoke to dogs.

One morning in the dry month a hummingbird came over the wall. It was no bigger than her thumb, green as river weed with a throat that flashed blue when it turned, and it hung in the air before the flowers as if weighing them. Maren held her breath. The bird dipped to the highest blossom, drank, and was gone again before she could count to ten. Each morning after that it came back, and each morning she left a dish of sugar water on the wall for it, and each morning the bird drank from the dish and then from the orchids, never choosing one above another.
In the autumn her father sold the hives to a man from the coast and told her to pack her things. Maren took nothing but a jar of the last honey and walked out through the gate. Behind her, the orchids leaned over the wall and the hummingbird circled once above the empty dish, then turned south after her, as if it had always known which way she would go.
