Hummingbird and hibiscus on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A green hummingbird with outstretched wings hovers beside a red hibiscus-style flower with white centre and a thin green stem with leaves. The bird has dark outlined linework, with soft shading on its body and tail, and the flower is shaded in reds and pinks. The design is in full colour on a smooth area of skin, with a purple top visible at the right edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hummingbird reaches the harbour wall before the ferry does, which is how you know the morning has gone wrong. It hangs over the hibiscus at the foot of Coal Quay, a green blur, then dips its beak into the red bloom with the patience of a clerk checking figures twice. You have been watching it for a week. Nobody in Saltcombe Bay grows hibiscus this late in the year, and nobody has explained where this one came from.

Old Teodor, who keeps the chandlery, says the bird rode in on a crate of mangoes from the islands, three weeks out, and found the one warm corner of the town that suited it. He says it the way he says most things, as if daring you to argue. You do not argue. You go down the steps with the bucket and the stiff brush, scrubbing diesel from the slipway, and the bird lifts off the flower and hovers level with your face, close enough that you can hear the small mechanical hum of its wings.

"Go on, then," you tell it. Its black eye holds yours for a moment. Then it swings out past the moored boats and the gulls quarrelling on the chains, and heads north over the cliffs toward the old lighthouse, where the wind is wrong for anything small. You wait until it is a speck. The ferry sounds its horn at last, long and low, and the first lorries begin to rattle down the hill.

Teodor is at the door when you climb back up. "Gone?" he asks. "Gone," you say. He nods as if he expected nothing else, and you find you are glad it came, and gladder it left before anyone could try to keep it.
