Hummingbird feeding from hibiscus on ribs
Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A hummingbird with a pink and green head and wings hovers at a large orange and pink hibiscus flower, sipping nectar from its central stamen. Smooth shading and detailed feathering give the bird and petals a soft, three-dimensional look, with green leaves below the flower. Bright colour dominates against a faint grey and blue background wash across the side of the torso.

Sit down, the lot of you, the urn has only just boiled and I have not finished with the hummingbird. Yes, Dennis, a hummingbird, in Hebden Bridge, in February. Nobody believed Miss Ruth Calder either, until she showed them the hibiscus.

Ruth kept a glasshouse behind the old mill, where she grew things the rest of the valley swore would never take. The hibiscus was the wildest of them, a fat orange bloom with a pink throat that opened every morning as if it had been told it was late. That February the frost came down so hard the beck froze at the edges, and a pane along the south side cracked clean through. Ruth stuffed the gap with newspaper and sat up nights beside a paraffin heater.
On the third morning a bird the colour of a bruised plum hung in that broken pane, its wings going so fast they blurred into a grey haze. It drank from the flower's central stamen as though it had an appointment. Ruth said she did not breathe until it left, and then she went straight to her ledger and wrote the date down, because she knew no one would take her word otherwise.
Every morning after that the bird came back, and so did she, and by March half the street was lining up along the mill wall to watch. Ruth never told a soul where it roosted. She only said that some windows are better left cracked, so the things that want to come in can find their own way.
