Hummingbird tattoo on the side of the neck
Realism · Neck · Colour · Photo
A hummingbird in flight is shown in profile, with a long beak, green and yellow plumage, a red throat patch and grey shaded wings. A teal watercolour-style wash sits behind the bird, and the whole design is set on the side of the neck. The shading is smooth and detailed, with the colour ink dominating the image against a bright red backdrop.

Mari Oddie swept the boards of the Green Lantern dance hall every night after the fiddlers had gone home, and every night she found the same thing: a feather, green as new leaves, caught in the gap between two floorboards near the stage. Her grandmother said a hummingbird had come in through the high window the summer the river flooded, and had never found its way out again.

Nobody in the village believed that until the bird came. It hung above the punch bowl at the harvest supper, wings a blur, its throat flashing red as a lamp. The fiddler stopped mid-reel. Old Tomas Fenn set down his pipe and said that a bird which stays in a room is asking for a tune in return.
So they played. Mari played the slow air her mother had taught her, the one with the drowned bell in it, and the little bird dropped out of the lamplight and turned three slow circles above the dancers. It settled on the rim of the water jug, drank, then rose toward the open door where the teal dusk lay over the wet fields.
Nobody saw it leave. In the morning the window latch was undone and a single green feather lay on the stage, and Tomas Fenn, who had never once paid to hear a tune in his life, dropped a coin in the collection jar for the first time.
