Humpback whale within a geometric crystal
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A humpback whale is drawn diving head first, with its long pectoral fins and fluke visible. The whale is rendered with fine linework on the head and body and stippled dotwork shading on the fins and fluke. It sits over a large, faceted crystal outline built from thin straight lines on a plain white background.

Dad's cart stopped at the top of Hollin Pass because the mule would not take another step past the cairn. Below us the valley was full of cloud, flat as milk, and the only thing sticking out of it was the crystal on the scree face, a clear faceted spike as tall as a church door. My father said the whale had gone into it head first, the way a diver goes off a rock, and that its fins were still out if you knew where to look.

I was nine and didn't believe him. He kept a tin of quartz chips from the old quarry and a slate with a whale scratched on it, badly, the fluke bent like a bootlace. He told me humpbacks used to come up to the high lakes before the sea drew back, and that they sang to the stone because stone was the only thing in the mountains that sang back when you knocked it.
That summer, when he was too ill to climb, I went up alone with a hammer and struck the crystal. It rang like a bell, a low note that rolled down the pass and came back off the far ridge. Then something answered from under the cloud, a long groan that bent around the rock. I struck again and the mist thinned, and there was the fin, pale and long as an oar, lying flat against the facets.
I left the slate on the cairn for whoever came next, with a fresh bent fluke scratched beside his. When I turned to go down, the mule was already walking.
