Scattered feathers in black and grey
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
Several feathers are drawn in different positions, some curving and some falling diagonally across the white page. Their quills and barbs are rendered with fine, soft pencil-like linework and graduated shading that gives them volume. The image is entirely black and grey on a plain white background, with the feathers arranged loosely in a diagonal flow.

The plumassier's sign had been painted over twice, and the third coat was already lifting at the corner where the damp came in off the canal. I had been sent to sweep the back room of Hollis & Daughter before the Thursday delivery, and I was on my knees with a broom when the first loose plume came down from the rafters, turning slowly, the way a leaf does in still air.

Mrs Hollis did not look up from her ledger. She had kept the business going since her husband's chest gave out, and she counted her stock the way other women count their children, by name and by weight. "Pheasant, that one," she said. "Don't let it touch the glue pot."
By noon there were feathers everywhere: a heron's plume snagged on the gas bracket, a jay's blue quill sliding under the cutting table, a single ostrich fluff drifting towards the door as if it had somewhere to be. I gathered them into a shoebox while she tallied. Each one was a small thing with a sharp spine and a soft side, and I learned that a feather falls with its vane held up, like a hand refusing to let go.
On the Friday the order from the theatre came back short, and Mrs Hollis sat with her head in her hands for a long while. Then she stood, took the shoebox from me, and tipped every feather onto the table. "Fetch the wire," she said. We spent the afternoon arranging them in a long diagonal, tips pointing the same way, down the length of the table to the open window. When the light went she lifted the sash, and the whole flock rose on the draught, and for a moment the room was full of falling things that had finally decided where to go.
