Hut on chicken legs on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A wooden hut with a shingled roof, a shuttered window, a round-topped door and a ladder stands on two scaly bird legs with clawed feet. The linework is bold and outlined, with hatching across the walls and stippled dots shading the window and roof. The design is in black and grey ink and is set centrally on the thigh against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hut had planted itself across the ambulance bay again, its bird feet spread over two painted bays as if it had paid for them. Dev Okafor, who had worked nights on Ward 9 for eleven years and no longer startled at much, walked out with his clipboard and a flask of tea gone cold. The shutters were open. Behind the lit window a kettle was already shrieking.

"You can't park there," he said, because somebody had to say it. The door creaked up on its iron hinge, and a voice came out of the dark smelling of woodsmoke and boiled beetroot. "Your ward is short a pair of hands, Devendra. Mrs Pryce in bay four has been asking for her hip to be seen to since teatime, and you have been standing in the car park with a flask."

He had never told anyone his full name was Devendra. He climbed the ladder anyway, because going back inside meant charting fluids for the third time that hour. The hut settled with a sound like knuckles cracking. Inside, a broom leaned against a bread bin, and a ledger lay open on the table, every patient on the ward written down in a hand he recognised as his own, dated for the coming fortnight.

At the bottom of the last page, in the box marked night cover, someone had written his name and a single word: tonight. He shut the book, climbed down, and walked the length of the corridor to bay four with the flask under his arm. Behind him the legs clicked away toward the bins, and when Mrs Pryce asked him where he had been, he told her the truth, and she laughed until her hip hurt.
