Log cabin and pine trees on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a log cabin with a grey shingled roof and smoke rising from the chimney, set among tall pine trees beneath a red and orange sun. A path winds through grass and stones toward a tree stump, and a red flower with green leaves sits at the base. Bold black outlines and solid fills give the design a classic flash look, with colour dominating the composition against a black background.

The chimney had been smoking since before dawn, which meant Ada Ruelle had been up for two hours arguing with the stove. She stood on the porch with her boots unlaced and looked down the path at the grey stones her father had hauled up from the creek one summer, and counted them the way she counted everything now. Eleven. There should have been twelve. The twelfth had gone to the stump on the day Tomas left, and he had not come back for it.

Over the pines the sun hung low and red, its eyes shut the way it always was in the hour before frost, as if it too had given up on the day. Her mother used to say the sun slept through the cold months and the cabin had to keep watch for it. So Ada fed the stove split ash and let the smoke climb straight past the shingles, a grey rope for anyone on the far side of the valley to follow.
On the fourth evening a figure came out of the trees along the creek bed, stooping at each stone as though reading it. It was Tomas, thinner, with a sack over one shoulder and nothing in his hands to show for the years. He stopped beside the stump, set the sack down, and unfolded a red flower pressed flat between the pages of a seed catalogue, its petals gone the colour of old brick.
Ada didn't ask where he had been. She went down the path and stepped on each stone in turn, and when she reached the last one she bent and laid her hand over his, the flower caught between them, while the chimney kept breathing behind her into the cold.
