Before the cockerel, Agnes Holt had the first tins out on the sill and the oven door open to let the heat settle. Her two younger sisters were still asleep upstairs. Her brother Tom was somewhere past the Wash on a salt barge, owing the family three months' wages and a promise to be home for the harvest supper.

The old women in Holbeach said a loaf baked in a loop would call a traveller back, provided the baker never let the dough run out. So every morning Agnes rolled a rope of dough as long as her forearm, folded it over itself and pinched the ends together, a shape with no start and no finish. Her grandmother had taught her that the loop was the only shape that could hold a person without a door.
On the twelfth morning the knock came before the bread was cool. It was not Tom. It was a carter's boy with a sack of flour and a letter in oilskin, saying the barge had gone down in the squall off Boston with all hands, and that the bargemen's wives were to be told before the church bell rang.
Agnes stood a long while with the loaf in her hands and the oven ticking as it cooled. Then she tore the loop only once, down the middle, and carried a half up each side of the stairs, so that her sisters would wake to a curve that still remembered the whole.
