Sister and brother heart outlines on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two overlapping heart outlines sit on the inner forearm, one in red with the word Sister written in script along its edge and one in blue with the word Brother written in script beneath it. The linework is thin and even, with solid lettering and no shading. The red and blue ink are the only colours, set against plain skin with a blurred background of packaging.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain came down on Saltergate market the way it always did in November, sideways off the river and into the gaps between the awnings. Mab Cotter sold red wool from the end stall, and her brother Tam sold blue, and for nineteen years they had shouted prices across the gap between their barrows as if it were a wall they were building.

One wet morning Tam packed his blue skeins into a sack and said he was going down the coast to work the herring boats. Mab did not look up from her bundles. She knotted a length of red wool around her wrist and told him the knot would hold until he came back, and that if it slipped he should come home sooner than he meant to.

The winter was long. Mab sold red to the dyers' wives and to the men who mended nets, and every stall-keeper asked after the blue. She kept the knot tight. In March the rain ran so hard the gutters sang, and a boy came up the market shouting that a boat had come in with a man aboard who knew the Cotter name. Tam stood under the eaves with salt in his beard and a blue thread tied beside her red one, both of them frayed to the same length.

Neither of them said much. Mab unwound her knot and laid it beside his, and the two colours lay together on the wet cobbles, one curving into the other, neither easy to read without covering the other. They took down the barrows that afternoon and sold everything for a shilling the bundle, because the rain was still falling and there was no one left to haggle.
