Interlocking female symbols and rainbow on forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two black female gender symbols interlock near the top of the forearm, shaded with solid black ink. Behind them, a rainbow wash in red, orange, yellow, green and blue flows down the arm in soft, blended strokes, with a faint sunburst of orange at the top. Black linework swirls and a partly visible script sit at the lower end of the design, and the arm is shown against a grey top, jeans and a wooden floor.

The rain stopped at half past four, so I went down to the harbour with the shop keys still in my apron pocket. Dear Marj, you will not believe what the sky did. The clouds had sat on the cliff all afternoon like wet washing, and then they tore open over the fish quay and a rainbow came down so low it seemed to rest on the nets. Mr Pell was out on the slipway shouting at his boy to get the tarpaulins off before the colours ran. I stood by the bollards and watched a band of red slide into orange, then yellow, and right through the middle of it the sun opened out in a fan, the way it does in the old church window.

I thought of you straight away, of course. I thought of the bakery, and the windowsill above the proving trays where we scratched our two rings with a hairpin the summer you turned sixteen. Mother said it was a disgrace and Mrs Garrow scrubbed at it for a year, but the marks never came out. The little crosses at the bottom of the circles and the curl at the end of each stroke, like a fern uncurling, are the first thing I see every morning when I unlock the door and the light catches the glass.
Pell's boy asked me what I was smiling at, and I told him the sea was showing off. He said it was only weather. He is nine and has not learned yet that some things are worth standing still for.
Your train gets in on Thursday, so I have left the back door on the latch. If the colours come again before then, I will walk down to the quay and wait where you can see me from the platform steps.
