Woman's face and wolf with tribal band on calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A woman's face and a wolf's head are stacked vertically down the leg, framed by bold tribal bands in black with small red accents. The faces are rendered with smooth grey shading and fine detail around the eyes and fur. Colour is limited to a few red highlights against the black and grey, and the design wraps along the outside of the calf.

The wolf came down to the monastery gate the week the snow shut the pass, and Brother Anselm, sent to ring vespers by hand because the bell rope had frayed, saw it standing in the lantern light and did not move. Its eyes held the light the way wet stones do. He dropped the rope and ran for the abbot, who said the thing was hungry and should be fed or left to the cold, and that a monastery was not a granary.

So Anselm carried out the heel of the winter loaf, and found a woman standing in the snow behind the animal. She was Ilse, the weaver from the lower village, who had walked up the mountain path with a red thread wound round her wrist and her grey hair loose under the hood. She did not thank him. She only said that the wolf had been driven out of its den by the storm, and that her own two boys had been taken by fever the autumn before, and that the bell had been the last sound they heard. She asked him to leave the rope alone for one night.
He did. The wolf lay down against the foot of the tower and the woman sat with her back to its ribs until the bells would have rung, and nobody rang them. In the morning the abbot found the frayed rope knotted with red wool, and the snow beside the tower was marked only by two sets of prints going down the mountain. Every evening after that, when the fog came up from the valley, Anselm heard a loom working somewhere below the pass, slow and steady, as if someone were keeping time for something that had decided to stay.
