Colour realism tattoo of Jack Skellington and his ghost dog Zero on the upper arm, with a snowflake above.

Jack Skellington and Zero on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows Jack Skellington, with his skull-like head and striped black suit, and Zero, the white ghost dog with an orange glowing nose and red collar, with a small snowflake in the upper left. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft highlights on the white figures and deep black stripes on the suit. Ink is mainly black and grey with accents of red, orange and blue, and the design fills the frame across the upper arm.

Dear Hal,

You will not believe the stranger who came up the lane the week of the Lammas fair. He had a skull for a head and a striped coat buttoned to the chin, and he asked every picker in the orchard whether anyone had seen frost. Nobody had. Mrs Pryce crossed herself and told him to mind the wasps.

He didn't mind them. He sat on the wall at the far end of the rows and did sums on a slate, and every evening a white hound came padding out of the hedge with a nose glowing like a coal someone had forgotten to blow out. It nosed the windfalls and sniffed the air, and once, when the moon was thin, it lifted a paw towards the gate as if it could hear sleigh bells over the Downs.

Last Thursday the pickers went home early and I stayed to finish the top row. The skeleton was up the ladder beside me, plucking the last russet. He pressed one into my palm. It was cold as a well bucket. "Keep that one," he said. "It will be the last thing warm in the county."

I have it on the windowsill now, and it hasn't rotted. Come home before the leaves turn, Hal, and bring your good coat. The frost has started early this year, and it's sitting on the apple in my hand.
