Neo-trad skull creature with bones on a limb
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A dark, horned beast skull with a glowing yellow eye dominates the top of the design, with a hunched grey figure and curled, swirling shapes beneath it. Two green-tinged human skulls and a ribcage sit at the bottom, against a red splash that runs down the composition. Bold black outlines, smooth shading and saturated green, red and yellow ink give it a vivid, cartoonish finish.

Mrs Pargeter had warned me about the cellar the same way she warned about the hot tap and the gull that sat on the bins, as a matter of fact rather than fear. So when the bulb went at two in the morning and I heard the boards give under the kitchen lino, I did not go down with a torch. I went down with the poker from the sitting room, which Mrs Pargeter had said was for the grate and not for anything else.

The thing at the foot of the steps was bigger than the lodgers' gossip had led me to expect. It had a horned skull for a head, long as a rowing boat, with one eye lit the colour of weak tea held up to a lamp. Its shoulders hunched over a heap of old bones that someone had clearly been collecting for years, and the bones were wet with something red that ran across the flagstones towards the drain. It turned its head at me slowly, the way Mr Ashdown turned his head when he thought he was being asked for money.
"You'll be wanting the room at the top," I said, because I could not think what else to say, and because the room at the top had stood empty since the last lodger left owing six weeks.
It made a sound like a kettle thinking about it. Then it set something down on the bottom step, a green-lit skull, polished and neat, and climbed back into the dark with the ease of a man going up for his slippers.
In the morning there was a skull on the mat and a fresh pot of tea on the landing, and Mrs Pargeter said nothing about either. The room at the top let itself the following week. I have never asked what they paid.
