Jack Skellington with roses and banner
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
The design centres on a grinning, skull-like Jack Skellington face with stitched mouth and round eyes, set above a banner with the title of the film. Black and grey linework and shading sit alongside red-shaded roses, grey leaves and a small bat, with swirling filigree and a spider web filling the background. The composition is symmetrical and vertical, with the roses forming a frame around the central face and banner on a solid black ground.

The last frost on the Ninth Dome was logged the year the lamps failed, and after that nobody in Harrow Deep could agree what Christmas had been. The old people said it was a feast with snow in it. The children said it was a fright with presents. Mara Quill, who kept the seed vault, said it was whatever the bats were carrying.

Every autumn a thin man with a face like a split plate walked out of the scrubland with a banner of old film stock rolled under one arm. He was bone all the way through, he said, but his stitching was good. He always stopped at the rose beds behind the vault and asked for one red bloom and a length of silver wire. Mara gave them to him every year, because the roses were the only thing in the dome that grew without being told.
One autumn he did not come. A black scrap of cloth came instead, flapping over the vault roof with a note knotted to its wing: The sleigh is stuck in the sump-ice. Bring the wire. Mara took a rose and the spool and walked past the last lamp, where the ground was grey as slate and the spiders had strung their webs between the pylons like lace. She found him sitting on a cracked hull, turning the bloom in his long fingers. 'You never ask why I want roses,' he said. 'Nothing else out here is stubborn enough to flower in the dark,' she said, and handed him the wire.
He wove the silver through the stems and lashed the rose to the sleigh's ice-spike, and the bat lifted it into the sky. Back in Harrow Deep, the children woke to red petals on the vault steps and a new lamp burning above the door. They agreed, for once, that the thing had been a feast after all.
