Winged skull with tribal swirls
Black and grey · Flash
A detailed skull with feathered wings spreading out on either side, its jaw open to show teeth. Shading is smooth and realistic on the skull and feathers, with bold black tribal swirls and dark speckled splatter framing the figure. The design is rendered in black and grey on a pale background, centred and filling the frame.

The snow has been coming sideways over the Scarrow Pass since noon, and by the time you reach the last cairn the hospice bell has gone quiet below you. Nobody rings it in weather like this. You tuck the sack of salt higher on your shoulder, keep the letter inside your coat where the wet cannot reach it, and count the stones the way your grandmother taught you, one for every breath you do not need to think about.

The brothers at the hospice keep an iron sign above the door, a skull with wings pinned out either side like a kite that never flew, and a wind-cut swirl of carved stone around it that looks like smoke frozen mid-curl. They say it keeps watch on who crosses. You used to laugh at that. You have stopped laughing.
Something drops onto the cairn ahead of you, soft as a dropped glove. It is the skull from the sign, grown wings wide as a barn door, feathers ticking with ice, its jaw hinged open to show a row of teeth that catch what light is left. It does not lunge. It tilts its head and waits, the way a clerk waits at a counter. "Name," it says, in a voice like boots on gravel. "And the road you walked."
So you tell it. You tell it about the ewes lost in the November drift, the bridge that gave under the carter, the brother who stayed behind to dig them out. You tell it everything true and nothing kind. The wings fold slowly. The jaw closes with a sound like a latch.
When you reach the hospice step the bell starts again, one clean note, and the sign above the door is only iron now, swinging. In the snow at your feet lie three black feathers and a dark spatter of ink, dry as a seal, and you understand the road has been paid for.
