Japanese peony arm sleeve

Japanese · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A side view of an arm covered by a full sleeve tattoo. Large cream-white peonies and scrolling cloud or wave forms sit over a dark background at the top, while red and green flowers with leaves appear lower down on the forearm. The bold black shading and dotted ornament details contrast against the skin, and the dark backdrop isolates the arm.

You are nineteen the summer Mr Ashdown lets you take over the stencil bench at the dye works behind the station in Harrow Lea, though nobody in the town calls it anything but the Blue House. The cloth goes in white and comes out the colour of wet slate. Between those two things is the part you are paid to do: cutting peony shapes from oiled card and pricking the dots along the wave edges with a pin, so the paste knows where to sit.

Doreen Ashdown brings you tea and watches your hands. "He never let anyone prick the clouds," she says. "Says the dots are where the cloth remembers it's meant to be a flower." You laugh, but you try it her way, lighter, and the next bolt comes off the line with the scrolls standing up clean against the ground.

The commission is for a travelling showman's banner, a fat thing for the fair that sets up on the green every August. It needs six cream peonies on a black ground, and lower down, reds and greens that the showman's wife has ordered by letter from a catalogue in Leeds. Ashdown mixes the ground himself, dark as a church at midnight, and dips the first brush of paste.

When the bolt is hung in the yard to dry, the peonies look lit from inside, pale against all that black. Ashdown tells you the trick is never to paint the flower at all. You paint around it and let the dark do the work. You stand under the banner long after the others have gone home, reading the pinpricked dots as if they were a letter someone meant you to find.
