Colour realism tattoo of a halved papaya, blueberries and a strawberry across a forearm, with a partly visible hand design above.

Realistic fruit cluster on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a halved papaya with seeds, a cluster of blueberries and a large strawberry with a leaf, all rendered with soft shading and highlights. A partly visible hand-shaped motif and a few letters sit above the papaya, though the lettering is cut off by the frame. Warm oranges and reds dominate against dark greens and blues on a dark background.

Mind the wasps, they've been at the windfalls since Tuesday, and sit where you can see my hands, because my hands are half of this. Ada Penhallow kept the bottom orchard above Lydd for thirty-one Augusts, and in all that time she sold nothing from the north row. Her father grafted those trees from a seed a sailor pressed into his palm in 1911, and he told her the fruit would only ripen for someone patient enough to wait for it.

The summer I'm talking about, a boy came up the lane carrying a tin box of blueberries picked off a hedge two valleys over, purple right to the stalk. He wanted a papaya in exchange, split open so he could see the seeds like black pepper, and one strawberry, red as a stop sign, with its green cap still on. Ada laughed at him. Then she looked at his hands, scratched raw from the brambles, and she cut the papaya in two and wrapped the strawberry in a dock leaf.

They traded every Saturday after that, until September came and the boy stopped turning up. Ada waited at the gate with the knife in her apron. In the seventh week she found his tin on the wall post, lid pressed down, and inside it a palm print in orange pith, fingers spread wide, as though he had tried to hold the whole orchard in one hand and given up.

So that's why I never sell from the north row. Go on, then. Take a blueberry. Mind, they're not for keeping.
