Japanese torso and sleeves with blossom and eagle

Japanese · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A bare torso and both arms are covered in a large Japanese style tattoo. Pink cherry blossoms and green leaves sit among dark grey clouds, with a yellow and brown eagle on the left side of the chest and a second bird and a koi fish on the arms. The bold outlines and solid black and grey shading contrast with the coloured blossoms, birds and fish, and the image is framed against a plain black background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The spring the river at Mizukami ran high with snowmelt, the koi called Hanabi decided she was done with the shallows. Every carp in the pool had a story about the falls above the village, where the water came down in a white curtain, and anything that climbed past the third ledge was said to turn into a dragon. The fishmonger's boy laughed at her. The heron laughed harder.

The eagle who nested on the cliff above the falls was not laughing. Kessen had watched a hundred fish throw themselves at the water and fall back broken. He told her the cherry trees on the bank would drop their petals into the current before she was halfway, and she would be carried down to the rocks as a pink smear. "Then I will go up in the pink," she said, and she began to climb.

She reached the second ledge by the dark of the moon. Clouds came down off the mountain and wrapped the rock, grey and heavy, and the spray turned to rain on her scales. Petals rode the foam beside her, fallen blossom from the trees along the bank, and each time she stalled they pressed under her belly and pushed. At the third ledge the water stopped being water and became only light, and she could no longer tell whether she was still swimming.

When the mist cleared, she was lying on wet stone at the top with her gills working. Nothing had changed except her sight, which now caught every thread of the current below. Far down, the eagle circled, and he dipped one wing as if to admit he had been wrong. She did not become a dragon. She swam back down to the pool the next morning, and the boy, watching the carp, swore that one of them had gone the colour of the sky at sunset.
