Full body Japanese tattoo with eagle and cherry blossoms

Japanese · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A full body tattoo covers the chest, stomach and both arms of a man photographed against a black background, with his face cropped out of frame. A large eagle sits on the central torso, surrounded by pink cherry blossoms and dark stylised clouds, while koi fish swim down the arms and a turtle appears near the lower body. The shading is smooth and the composition is symmetrical, with the blossoms and clouds framing the central figure.

The tide had turned by the time Maud finished the eagle's left wing. She sat back on the stool with the brush still wet, listening to the barge knock gently against its mooring at Brentford. Her father had painted that same bird on the cabin door forty years before, and the varnish had gone the colour of weak tea. Every spring she meant to strip it. Every spring the bird stayed.

The commission had come from a man in Chiswick who wanted his late mother's screen repainted. Eight panels, black lacquer gone grey with smoke, and under the grime a river of cherry blossom, pink as a fingernail, rising through clouds like steam. He wanted the koi back too, the orange one that swam up every panel and never reached the top. Maud had told him that koi are painted that way on purpose. The painter shows the effort against the current and withholds the arrival, so the viewer has to keep climbing too.

On the last night she found a signature scratched beneath the turtle's shell, a name in a cramped hand and a year: Tomi, 1961. Someone had painted it once and left a claim on the work. The turtle carried its small mountain on its back, steady as a hull, and the lacquer had cracked around one eye as if the creature had been weeping. Maud did not mend the crack. She mixed the cheapest gold she could buy and laid the koi's last stroke so the fish broke the surface at the top of the falls.

When the client came for the screen in March, he ran his thumb along the cracks and said nothing for a long time. Then he asked whether the fish had made it. Maud said it had. Outside, the river kept moving, and the eagle went on watching it.
