The wasps had found the windfalls before Nell did, and she spent the first hour of the morning kicking through long grass under the Bramleys, filling the basket with fruit that smelled of sugar and rot. The orchard had gone quiet since her father's stroke in the spring. Her uncle drove the tractor now, badly, and the rows were already uneven, the pruning done in fits and starts.

At eleven she went into the packing shed for twine and found the note pinned to the cork board beside the spray schedule. It was in her mother's hand, the letters leaning and slipping as if they had been written on the bounce of a trailer. Keep Moving Forward, it said, and above the o in Moving she had drawn a small heart, the way she used to on shopping lists when she was trying to be cheerful. Nell had never seen it before. The drawing pin had rusted and the paper had gone soft at the corners, so it had been up there a long time, long enough for everyone to stop seeing it.

She stood holding the twine and thought about the spring frosts, the men from the cooperative, and her mother going out in the dark with a lamp to check the blossom. Forward had never seemed like a direction to Nell, only something people said at funerals or printed on mugs.

She took the note down, folded it into her back pocket, and carried the full basket out to the lane where the crates waited. Beyond the gate the next row ran off towards the hedge, heavy with fruit nobody had picked yet. She set the basket down, pulled on her gloves and walked on.
