Never don't give up script on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the words Never don't give up written in a flowing black script across the inner forearm. The letters have smooth, even linework with a little variation in weight, and the ink is solid black with no visible shading. The text runs diagonally from left to right and fills most of the frame, with the arm bent slightly behind it.

Gareth had the words done the week the Ffald shaft closed, and he had them spelled out the way he'd seen them on a birthday card, all looping capitals and no apology. Never don't give up. Mam read it off his arm at the kitchen table and said it was a double negative, which is what a schoolteacher says when she means something else. Gareth said it meant two things at once, and that was the only honest way to say it in Wales.

The shop was above the chemist on Bute Row, run by a woman called Non Pritchard who kept a kettle on and a bucket of wipes by the chair. She had talked him out of a dragon and into the script, and he paid her in fivers from the redundancy envelope. I drove him there and sat in the van with the radio on, listening to the bakery shutter go up and down, thinking about the forty years the pit took from us and how little we were asked for them.

He came out with a square of cling film taped over his forearm and a face like he had been let off something. We walked back past the chapel with its boarded windows, and he stopped at the gate and pushed his sleeve up to show me the letters, still shining with ointment.

"Never don't give up," he said. "Go on, tell me it's wrong."

I didn't. The lines were clean, the tails looped the way the old men's signatures used to on the wage slips, and the whole thing ran uphill like it had somewhere to be.
