The ink was the last thing in the crate that still worked. Everything else had gone to dust or to the recyclers, but Mother Okonjo's pen hadn't, and neither had the small brown bottle of iron gall she kept sealed in wax. I was nine when she taught me to hold a nib at the angle that makes the thin strokes thin. I hated it, because the hull lights never dimmed and nothing on Carrow Deep ever needed to be written slowly.

The phrase came off a scrap of paper the salvage crew pulled from a sealed locker on Deck Four. Nobody aboard spoke the old tongue beyond a few kitchen words, so Mother Okonjo sat with the scrap under the reading lamp for three evenings before she said it aloud. La vita e bella. She laughed at the accent she couldn't reproduce, then stopped laughing, because the hand that wrote it had pressed so hard the nib had torn the page.
I asked her who had written it. She said a man who had kept something alive by refusing to be cruel about it, which I did not understand until the dome cracked in my twenty-third year. I sat three nights beside a dying radiator copying those words onto the back of a ration card, over and over, because my hands needed a task and my head needed somewhere quiet to go.
When the lights came back, I inked the phrase onto the inside of the hatch wheel, where every shift would pass it, thin and even, the way she taught me. Mother Okonjo would have said the letters were too neat for a room that smelled of machine oil and old fear. I left them that way anyway.
