Nobody at the Palais on Tennant Street believed Maisie Coyle would still be laughing when the ballroom closed, yet she was the last one on the floor every Saturday, her blue frock swinging as the band wound down into "Goodnight Sweetheart". My mother cleaned the cloakrooms there for twenty-two years and said you could tell a woman's character by how she left a dance. Maisie left like a ship coming into harbour, unhurried and sure of the tide.

The winter the coal ran short, Mr Dabney had a board painted above the stage with words he'd copied from his grandmother's Bible, lettered in a looping hand that cost him more than he admitted. The men called it pious nonsense and the women called it a waste of paint. Maisie read it aloud one night, tapping each line with her fan, and declared it the only honest advertisement the place had ever carried.

Her husband Eddie went to France in the spring of 1940 and didn't come back from the beaches. People expected her to stop coming. She came every Saturday instead, in the same blue frock, and when the hall was cold enough to see our breath she would laugh at the chill and pull me onto the floor with her. "Dance with me, Ivy," she said. "The future's not going anywhere without us."

When the Palais was pulled down in the autumn of 1958, I went through the rubble and found a single gold-leaf letter, a curl of a capital S, lying in the dust. I still keep it in my purse. Some nights I take it out and turn it over in my fingers, and I think of Maisie stepping into the cold with her head up, not afraid of a thing that hadn't happened yet.
