Lace-patterned hummingbird on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A hummingbird in flight is drawn in fine black linework, with its wing and body filled by intricate floral and mandala-like patterns. Its long tail curls downwards and tapers into a thin trailing line. The design is shown in black ink only, set against smooth skin on a person's upper back, with the shoulder at the right edge of the frame.

The officer at Strand Road wanted the tin opened, so I opened it, and a smell of camphor rose up between us. Inside, folded in tissue, was a sheet of drawing paper no bigger than a tea towel. He lifted it by the corners under the strip light, the way my aunt Ilse used to lift a finished collar, and he frowned at the hummingbird in black ink.

'It's lace,' I said. 'It's a pattern. The bird is made of the same stitches.'
'Pattern for what?'
'For nothing yet. That's the point of it.' Aunt Ilse drew a new one every winter in the room above the bakery, because bobbins cost money and ink did not. She filled each wing with flowers the way other women fill a hem, and she never once let a tail finish. 'Leave the last line open,' she used to say, 'or the bird has nowhere to go.'
He ran his thumb along the thin trailing line, stopping where it ran off the paper's edge. Behind me a lorry reversed with a long complaining beep. I waited for him to say the paper was contraband, or that the stamp on the tin was wrong, or that I should go back to the queue. Instead he said his mother had kept a handkerchief with a bird like this, given to her at a market in another town, and she had never known what it was called. He folded the tissue back over the drawing, careful with the corners, and handed the tin across the counter. 'Go on,' he said. 'It's a long way to anywhere.' Walking out past the barrier, I looked back once. He had propped the empty paper against his screen, the bird turned toward the glass, its tail still trailing off the edge into a room where nobody was counting.
