Blue feathered bird on upper back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A large bird with outstretched wings covers most of the upper back, its wings built from rows of turquoise and black feathers. The body and tail are filled with black lace-like patterns, including floral motifs and paisley shapes. Turquoise and dark blue shading gives the feathers depth against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marta had been walking since the bells at Col de Vellan rang for the morning, and the wool bundle on her back had grown heavier than the bread. Under the oilcloth lay the collar her aunt had worked through a whole winter, a cloak of blue-thread wing feathers with black bobbin lace filling the body, so fine the frost could not find it. The buyers at Bergerhof would pay for it only if it reached them unbroken.

At the cairn where the path bends, a jay came down out of the pines and landed on the stone, its own feathers the same blue as the thread. It cocked its head at the bundle. Marta had seen crows steal washing from the line, but she did not expect a bird to want lace. She untied the cloth to show it she had nothing to eat, and the jay hopped closer, looking not at her but at the paisley curls of black thread, as if reading them.

The wind came up off the snow field and lifted the collar free of her hands. For a moment it opened like a real wing, and the jay rose to meet it, and the two shapes crossed over the gorge. Marta ran to the edge and watched the lace fall, catching on a juniper below, where it hung in the grey light like a letter someone had begun and not finished.

She did not go down for it. She counted the stitches in her head, the way her aunt had taught her, and found she could reckon the whole pattern from memory. At the inn in Vellan she told the buyers the collar had been ruined by weather, and they paid her half. The jay sat on the cairn every morning after that, and she never once saw it carry anything but its own bright feathers.
