Lace-winged moth on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large moth is tattooed across the upper back, with feathered antennae and wings that are partly smooth grey shading and partly black lace-like patterning along the lower edges. The linework is soft and the shading fades into the skin, giving the wings a translucent look. The image is in black and grey, with a faint cool tint in the upper wing areas, and the moth is centred on the frame.

The lamp on the Marigold's mast drew the moths out of the dark long before the herring did. By two in the morning there were dozens of them batting against the glass, pale as ash, and Dad said they were the only crew we carried who never asked for a share.

I sat on an upturned fish box with the big trawl net across my knees, sorting the torn mesh. Gran had taught me to darn with a needle cut from a sliver of bone, and to count the knots the way she counted bobbin pins. Some holes were from the Dogger ground, where the net snagged on wreckage and came up ragged. Others were older, frayed to lace by salt and years.
One moth came down onto the mesh beside my hand and stayed. Its wings were grey where the lamp caught them and black at the edges, a fringe of dark openwork like the hems Gran used to make for the church cloths. I didn't move. Dad said you never brushed a moth off a net, you let it finish with you. So I threaded the twine slowly and worked around it, filling each broken square in the shape its edges already seemed to want.
By dawn the moth had gone, but the net had a patch of new mesh the exact width of its wings. Dad lifted it, held it up to the grey light and said nothing for a long time. Then he said the net would fish better for it, which was the nearest he ever came to praise. I still think about that patch, the place where something passed through and left the mending behind.
