Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo covers the upper arm and part of the shoulder, showing an outlined figure with beaded or chain-like detail across its body. Flowers and leaves wrap around the figure on the left and lower sections. The work uses fine grey outlines with light shading, and the photograph is taken at an angle with a white top visible behind the arm.

Sit closer, the fire won't carry your ears to the back of the room. Yes, you, with the beads in your pocket. The woman who walked out of the alder wood the spring the mill burned was not a woman at all, not to begin with. Her shoulders were bark and her hair was a tangle of vine, and at her throat she wore a string of seeds the size of cherry stones that rattled every time she turned her head.

Old Mabry at the forge swore she had given his daughter a bloom from the lotus pond, and that the girl slept three nights with her hand closed around it. The lane people took her for a wanderer. The miller's widow took her for a debt come home. She moved through the hedgerows picking flowers that grew nowhere else in the parish, pressing them into the hands of anyone who had lost something, and each seed on that string was a name she had been asked to carry for someone who could no longer carry it themselves.

Then the lord's men came with their ledgers and their axes, wanting the alders down for a new road. They found the wood had grown thick overnight, roots heaving the stones of the boundary wall. The steward sent for the woman to answer for it. She came up the lane slowly, scattering petals from a cloth bag, and when she stopped before him every seed at her throat began to glow like a coal.

He asked her what she wanted. She said nothing, only that he should count his beads at dusk. He laughed until he discovered he had none. So walk the road tomorrow, children, and mind the flowers along the verge. The road is still there, and so is the wood, and nobody in this village has been asked to pay for either since.
