Rearing horse with birds on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A rearing horse fills most of the frame, with its forelegs raised and its mane and tail flowing. Soft shading in black and grey gives the horse volume, and small birds and wispy clouds sit in the background behind it. The tattoo wraps across the upper arm and shoulder, and the image is a close, slightly angled photograph.

The stable yard at Carrowmere had been quiet since the frost, and Idrith had learned to listen for the grey colt before she saw him. He came up the valley road each morning with the wind at his back, shoulders dark with rain, and stood at the lower gate as though the whole kingdom of Ysmere were a fence he had decided to clear.

The steward wanted him saddled before the spring fair. He had already thrown three riders, one of them the king's own cousin, who landed in the cattle trough and swore at the sky. Idrith did not swear. She brought him sugared barley and a length of rope she never tied, and she talked to him about the salt marsh and the herons that stood in it like old men waiting for news.
On the last morning of the month the colt reared at the foot of the bluff. His forelegs struck the air above the gorse and his mane went out like smoke, and the rooks lifted from the chimneys in a black spill that the steward would later call an omen. Idrith did not reach for the bridle. She stood with her hands open and watched the clouds behind him turn the colour of pewter.
The gate was open when she came back at dusk, and nobody had seen him go. Only a single grey feather lay on the path, and above the ridge a line of birds crossed the last light, heading west toward the sea, where no king had ever thought to build a fence.
