Leaping bass and fisherman on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder area. A largemouth bass leaps from the left with its mouth wide open, rendered in greens and yellows with detailed scales and shading. To the right, a small fisherman stands on weathered wooden posts beneath a pale, cloudy blue sky. The soft, blended shading and full colour palette give the scene a painterly, realistic finish.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bass came out of the reeds at the far end of Harrow Mere like something fired from a cannon, mouth wide enough to swallow a teacup, and Uncle Tom swore afterwards it was the last thing he saw before the lure went clean out of his hand. Nobody believed him at the Crown that night. Nobody believed him for thirty years, either, not until the old jetty came down in the storm of '87 and a diver brought up a rusted reel with a brass spinner still clipped to its line.

Tom never talked about the fish. He talked about the posts. The jetty had nine of them, black with weed, and he would stand on the furthest one at dawn with the mist lifting off the water like breath, casting up towards the sky because that was where he reckoned the big ones lived. My mother said it was the only time he looked like a man with something to prove, and she was right, though not in the way she meant.

The letter from the solicitors arrived in March. Folded inside was a photograph, curling at the corners, of a bass the length of a cricket bat hanging from a spring scale, and on the back in Tom's careful capitals: TELL THEM IT WAS THE SKY THAT TOOK THE HOOK. Mother laughed until she had to sit down on the stairs.

I went down to the mere on the Sunday with his old rod. Half the posts had gone under. I stood on the last one that still held, cast into the pale clouds lying over the water, and felt the line go suddenly, beautifully heavy.
