Skull and wolf on the chest
Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A large skull with open jaws sits at the centre of the chest, with a snarling wolf head above it and feathered, wing-like forms spreading out on the right. The shading is smooth and detailed, using dark outlines, highlights on the bone and soft grey gradients for depth. The tattoo is entirely black and grey and fills most of the frame against plain skin.

Pass the lantern along, and mind the rope, because the sea doesn't care who it takes first. Now, where was I? Ah yes, the carver. Old Ansel Fenwick of Saltcote could make a gull look like it had stolen your supper and would fight you for the rest of it, and when the owners of the Mercy Ardent came to him with their purse, they asked for a wolf.

Not any wolf. They wanted it snarling from the bow with its jaws open wide enough to swallow the spray, and beneath its chin they wanted a skull, grinning white, sitting in the wolf's own mouth like a stone it had not quite managed to swallow. He gave the wolf a mane that lifted like grey feathers in a wind that was not blowing yet, and he shaded the bone so carefully that the lads swore the skull had been smoked over a fire. The owners said it was too grim. Ansel said grim was the only honest thing a ship could wear.
The Ardent sailed in March. Off the Horn the weather came down like a dropped anvil, and on the third night the boy at the wheel swore the wolf had turned its head. Nobody believed him until the foremast lantern showed it: the carved jaws were open wider than they had been, and the teeth of the skull looked fresh-scraped. The captain ordered the figurehead sawn off. The men who went to do it came back white, saying the wood was warm under their hands, and the sea went quiet for the first time in four days.
We came home on a calm, every one of us. Ansel's wolf is still on the wall of the chapel at Saltcote, and when the fishermen pass it they touch their caps to the skull, not the wolf. I say it was guarding the sea, and the sea, being a patient creditor, has never forgotten the debt.
