Lighthouse, lotus and sailing ship on shoulder and arm

Neo-trad · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large sleeve-style tattoo covers the shoulder and upper arm, showing a lighthouse on a cliff top, a lotus flower and a tall sailing ship with billowing sails. Bold outlines, ornamental scrolling waves and softer grey shading give the piece depth, with the ship rendered in finer detailed linework. The image shows two angles of the same arm in black and grey tones against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been standing under the fish market awning since the first bell, pretending to read the chalk prices on the board. The rain comes sideways off the harbour and finds every gap in your collar. Teodor Vance is hosing down the slabs with water that smells of bleach and salt, and when he sees you eyeing the lobsters he says six pounds, though you both know the boats came in light and the claws are barely moving.

Beyond the stalls the lighthouse on the point is only a grey smear, its lamp not yet lit. Teodor's father kept that light until the automation came, and he still talks about it as if the tower were a stubborn relation. At the corner, a woman in a yellow sou'wester sells white lotus blooms from buckets, the petals beaded and heavy. You buy one for your mother, who never liked the sea but always loved a flower that opens after dark, and the woman wraps the stem in a sheet of the Gazette.

When you reach the car, the folded paper has gone soft, and the printed photograph of an old three-master underneath the headline has bled into the wet. The sails have blurred into the water, so the ship seems to be leaving the page for open sea. You stand there a while, letting the rain run down the back of your hand, and you think about what Teodor said about the claws and the tide.

Then, far out on the point, the lamp catches, and its beam sweeps once across the harbour and the wet market roofs, and for a moment the whole street is lit silver.
