A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learned the weather the way other children learned their letters, by copying it. Your uncle kept the signal station at Gannet Head, and every dusk he made you sketch what the sky was about to do before it did it. So you drew. Blue for the cloud that sat low over the breakwater, heavy as wet slate, and red for the swell running underneath, its lines bending over themselves like the grain in driftwood.

The night the coaster Constance Vane missed the channel, the cloud split. A bolt came down over the harbour mouth in one white stroke, and for a single breath you could see every wave it had touched, each one lit red and climbing toward the wall. Your uncle shoved the logbook at you and told you to write the time. You wrote it, but your hand shook, and the figures came out wavering like the sea.

Three fishermen came in before dawn, one with a rag tied round his head, and they wanted to know who had been on the light. Nobody said your name. Your uncle simply turned the sketchbook toward them, where the blue storm sat on the left of the page and the red water threaded through the right, and the harbourmaster studied it upside down and went quiet.

You still pin one of those drawings in the lamp room each autumn. The bolt's point aims at the Constance Vane's name on the chart, and when the rain comes sideways off the Head, the blue ink bleeds a little into the red, as if the storm and the water had finally agreed on something.
