Tribal-style armband on the upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A wide black band of tribal-inspired pattern encircles the upper arm. The design combines solid black fields with bands of fine linework, including chevrons, stripes and a central motif of stacked curved shapes. The ink is entirely black and grey against warm skin, and the band is framed in the middle of the photograph with a white sleeve at the edge.

Nurse Agnes Parr had worked nights on Ward Seven for nineteen winters, and she knew the building the way a fisherman knows a coast. Every corridor had its sound. The lift at the east end sighed before it stopped, and the radiator under the window ticked in threes.

The night the stranger came up from the car park, she had a length of black cloth wound tight round one arm, the way a bandage is wound. She asked for the chapel. Agnes pointed her down the back stairs and thought no more about it until gone two, when the woman came back up with the cloth unwound. It was a band, wide and stiff, with a pattern pressed into it: long stripes, little chevrons like breaking water, and at the centre a stack of curved shapes like the bows of boats drawn up on sand. "My grandmother's," she said. "Every line is a night somebody sat with her."
Agnes did not believe in such things, but she believed in counting. She ran her thumb along the stripes and got to twenty-two before she lost her place. At four the old man in Bay C stopped asking for his brother, and Agnes sat with him, holding his hand while the ward went quiet around them. The woman stayed in the corridor the whole time, her back against the wall, not coming in and not leaving.
In the morning the band was folded on the chair beside the bed, one black stripe rubbed thin where a thumb had pressed it again and again. Agnes wrapped it round her own arm, tucked the end under, and walked home the long way along the harbour, counting the lines under her sleeve.
