Lily and poppies down a leg
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large red lily spreads across the outer thigh, with pink poppies and buds descending over the knee and onto the shin. The shading is soft and painterly, with smooth gradients in the petals and dark grey shadows behind the flowers. Bold colour dominates, set against green stems and leaves that trail through the composition.

The lorry had been idling in bay four for forty minutes when Inspector Ruth Ebbing finally climbed the step and knocked on the cab door. Inside, the driver held a clipboard against the steering wheel as though it might blow away. Eleven hundred stems, cut in a glasshouse outside Leiden, bound for a market in Kent that opened at five.

She walked the length of the trailer with her torch, counting buckets. Red lilies with orange throats, bent over in their cellophane sleeves. Wedged beside them, under a pallet of green stems, sat a shoebox taped shut. The label read POPPY, HAND-SAVED, in capitals pressed hard into the card. She asked what it was. He said it was his mother's seed, gathered from a garden near Almería, and that he had promised to sow it on her grave in spring. He had not had time to ask anyone's permission.
Ruth had a form for seeds. She had a form for everything. She read the box again, then the driver's hands, then the cracked tarmac under the sodium lights. She wrote a number on the clipboard, signed beneath it, and told him the seed was declared as ornamental and would clear with the lilies. He stared at her as if she had handed him something far heavier than paper.
When he pulled away, a single poppy had come loose from a bucket and lay on the tarmac, its petals crumpled to the colour of old wine. Ruth picked it up and tucked it into her coat pocket. In the morning she found it pressed flat against the lining, still red enough to catch the light.
