Bird, poppies and crystals on a calf
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A bee-eater style bird with turquoise wings and a purple-blue head sits among large orange poppies, green seed pods and a pearl chain, with a grey gear and purple and teal crystals at the lower edge. The linework is dark and defined, with soft blended shading on the feathers and petals and smooth colour transitions. Pale circular shapes and wash-like background colour frame the motifs, and the design wraps across the calf of a leg with a second partial copy visible beside it.

The brass gear skitters off the bench and under the glass counter, and you are on your knees on the lino before the bell over the shop door has stopped ringing. Mr Pell has been dead a fortnight, yet the shop still smells of his pipe. Among the dust you find the gear, a cluster of violet crystal no bigger than a walnut that he kept in the window, and a loose pearl from a necklace some grandmother brought in and never came back for.

Outside, a bird sits on the telegraph wire above the high street, green and gold and turquoise, with a bill like a sewing needle. Everyone says a travelling showman lost it at the Michaelmas fair. You stand in the doorway with the gear in your fist and watch it drop from the wire, flash over the rooftops, and vanish into the poppy field behind the gasworks.
That evening you climb the hill with the crystal in your coat pocket. The poppies have gone to seed, the pods green and fat as eggs, rattling when the wind comes through. You hold the gear up to the last of the light, and the crystal throws a bruise of purple across your palm. Somewhere in the stalks the bird calls once, a note like a spoon tapped against a glass.
You do not open the shop in the morning. You wind Mr Pell's longcase clock, which has not ticked since spring, and set the pearl in a saucer beside the crystal. Let the grandmother come asking for her necklace. Let her find the clock running and the bird asleep on the sill.
