Bee and rose wreath on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bee with detailed wings sits above a large dotwork rose, with smaller flowers, buds and leafy sprigs forming a wreath around them. A faint dotted circle runs behind the motifs. The linework is fine and the shading is built from stippled dots, all in black ink on pale skin against a plain light background.

Sit nearer the oven, love, the tins are still ticking and I'll have to talk over them. Nobody thought much of the bee that came in through the back door that April. It walked along the flour sacks as if it owned the place, and Mabel said it was a sign the honey was coming.

She was right, though not in the way she meant. The bee went out and came back with the dawn, always to the rose bush trained up the yard wall, the one her husband had planted the year they married. Every morning she caught its hum through the open window while she shaped the loaves, and every morning the loaves came out a little sweeter. The dough seemed to keep the bee's rhythm better than the clock did.
Then came the frost that killed the rose. Mabel went out with the secateurs, cut the black canes back to the root, and cried into the compost heap. She swore the bee would leave with it. Instead it came to the bakery sill the next morning and sat on the flour sack, bright as a coin, and she understood it was waiting for her to bake something worth staying for.
So she made a honey loaf scored in petals and set it on the sill. The bee drank its fill, climbed out and vanished over the rooftops. Come spring the rose grew back from the root, and whenever you smell warm bread before the sun is up, that is Mabel's bee checking the work.
