Lion, lamb and anchor design
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a lion's head in profile with a flowing mane, a lamb in front of it, and an anchor at the base. Chain links run through the mane, and lily blooms and loose petals fill the right side. The work is done in fine pencil linework with soft shading, and it is entirely black and grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
On the island of Harrow Skerry the lion and the lamb had shared one stable for as long as the ferrymen could remember, though nobody had ever seen them eat from the same trough. The lion kept the mane that the island women combed each spring, and the lamb kept the anchor that had been dragged from the harbour the winter the big boat went down. Each knew the other's weight by heart.

When the chain that bound the anchor to the lion's mane began to rust, the lamb went down to the shore at low tide and sat on the wet stones until the water came up to its knees. It asked the sea for a little patience. The sea, which had taken many things from Harrow Skerry and returned few, said nothing, but it sent a lily up through the sand, white and open, and the lamb took it in its teeth.
It carried the flower up the cliff path to the lion, who was sleeping with his head on the anchor's iron ring. The lamb laid the lily in the tangle of the mane and let the petals fall where they liked. In the morning the links had gone soft and bright, and the lion was awake, looking out past the cliffs towards the mainland, which he had never once turned his face to in all his years on the island.
